January Meeting Notes


January 16, 2018, 6pm

-Introductions
-Important note: Co presidents Kristi Aguirre and Danielle Heimstra have stepped down. Former Vice President Sarah Anton will fill the leadership void and take over as PTO president.  Thank you for your hard work and service, Kristi and Danielle, and Sarah, thank you for your flexibility!
-Principal's notes:
     -To help improve reading comprehension as indicated by standardized test scores,  Family Reading Nights will be held.
     -Builds literacy and cultural and racial awareness
     -Monday, January 26 at 6pm all families are invited to Black Men Read!  This will be a wonderful time for entertainment, bonding and learning.
     -Next event will likely be Latinos con libros, an experience of Latinx culture and a opportunity to underscore the importance and enjoyment of reading to kids in their native language.
     -In the planning stages is a Family Reading Night to highlight Arab American culture and literacy.
     -Again, ALL Mitchell families are welcome to these upcoming Family Reading Nights.  We strive to highlight and celebrate our greatest strength: diversity!  Coming together to celebrate each others' cultures will foster and grow our Mitchell community.
-Treasurer's Report:
     -Many thanks to the Anonymous donor, who supported our school with an incredibly generous check!
     -Many current fifth grade families still owe money for camp
     -Budget for International Night made larger (March 16)
-New business:
     -Need for a fundraising chair going forward to coordinate events, sales, "asks"
          -to be a new Board position with voting rights?
          -Ashley Curry nominated in absentia, seconded, and unanimously voted in
     -Book Fair set up on January 30th after school in the Community Room.  Will stay open during the Movie Night on Friday, February 2.

-"See, Think, Wonder" presentation by Ms. Faison.
     -This exercise gave insight to a very fun teaching strategy, which validates the disparate ways people think and generate ideas creatively.
     -Thank you Ms. Faison!  That was really fun.
-Conversations to have re:2018-2019 school year:
     -adding an IB unit to work on International Night?
     -scheduling conflicts between events (ex fall Book Fair and Fifth Grade Camp)
-All are invited to the next International Night planning session on Thursday, February 8.
     -Each of the five world regions should have representation of cultural artifacts, food, possibly a performance, and possibly a workshop/craft.
